lean manufacturing
MICROSOFT
Background
Microsoft Dynamics is a line of Enterprise Resource Planning software applications, targeted at smaller and medium sized companies – Dynamics NAV, Dynamics AX and Dynamics CRM. Microsoft markets Dynamics applications through a network of reselling partners who provide specialized installation and customization support. Microsofts’ development center in Copenhagen is responsible for all parts of the systems related to Logistics, Warehousing, Manufacturing, Sales and Purchasing.
2010
Problem
In Dynamics AX 2012 a new Manufacturing module was introduced that could mimic the LEAN Manufacturing philosophy in a software solution.
Process
I started the design process by investigating the manufacturing methodology and researching the target persona’s – their tasks and responsibilities. As the roles and responsibilities vary distinctly from a traditional manufacturing process, there was a need to create multiple ‘views’ of the same data, for the different target persona’s.
Design
A challenging part of the design process was to relate the visual characteristics of the LEAN Manufacturing methodology to the UI of the application. The most distinct element is the small colored card that is attached to each part of the final product, indicating the process step and status. I designed the main production board to incorporate this card element and at this visual element to the main production forms.
